We look forward to receiving your articles and sharing it with our readers; these guidelines will help us to achieve this goal.

This guide is here to help show how an article should be written, it defines an acceptable method of structuring your article for our publication. Also, included are some suggestions of what not to include in an article

General Guidelines

For your article, select a topic, unless topic is assigned to you, of interest to our readers and which you have personal knowledge or experience. An ideal length is 800 to 1,500 words unless otherwise noted. Longer articles might be edited for length. Unfortunately, not all submissions can be used.

All articles should be written by you or by a ghost writer, and all copyright holdings to the article must be yours, and only your name may be associated with any articles you submit to MSR. By submitting your work, you grant My School Rocks! Magazine and Kidz Biz Publications, LLC full, rights to publish your submission in any printed and/or electronic form both now and in the future. Your article must be unique and not found in other publications or throughout the web unless notified during submission. All articles become the property of MSR, unless otherwise agreed in writing and can't be used in any other publication or throughout web unless approved in writing by publisher of MSR prior.

When writing an article keep the following in mind:

  • Make sure there is a good "hook". Ask yourself: Is it fun or interesting to read?
  • Keep in mind what pictures might best depict or complement the article?
  • Is this new information or is the information presented in a new way?
  • How compelling is the information?
  • Use examples of good scenarios.
  • Is the article timely, meaning is it what people care about now?
  • Articles should focus on the selected topic such as allergies, School Safety, Bullying etc., rather than the company/organization or practice that is contributing the article.
  • Articles should be generic in nature and should not Promote any one company, unless assigned and informed to do so. (ie: An assigned Article on a specific company, organization, or program like Classroom Central, Donors Choose etc.)
  • Contain more than one quote from a particular company/source unless absolutely necessary.
  • The goal is to educate our readers about the topic by providing information, statistics and quotes from individuals, if applicable.
  • All material should be documented, referencing facts, not opinions. Characterizations should be avoided. Keep rhetoric to a minimum, avoid speculation, and focus on providing verifiable facts. Each factual assertion should be accompanied by a link to an external source
  • Clean Copy: no spelling errors, missing words, typos, or formatting issues.
  • All facts must be checked for 100% accuracy.
  • There should be examples of local schools and students/teachers participating in a program whenever possible.
  • When possible articles should be "Public School Heavy" but include all other types of schools as well.
  • Each article should have some information that we can pull out to draw the readers to a specific message.
  • Unless article is a gender-specific piece, balance examples of gender, race and age quotes but staying within our readership demographics ( parents (25-55) and children (5-14).
  • Create a short headline that readers will be intrigued by and want to read about. Include engaging words like "fun" or "How To". Ask a question in the headline.
